When we think of autonomous underwater vehicles or UAVs, we often think of killer robots or military applications. What many do not realize is that the future of warfare may be in the area of marine autonomy. Marine autonomy covers a broad spectrum from low-priced commercial products to high-tech military endeavors. One of the most significant areas where marine autonomy is being used today is with the development and implementation of fully operational workloads. These UAVs are able to operate as part of a team, reporting data back to their human operators and then doing a variety of other tasks in an autonomous manner. Another application for marine autonomy is the development and enhancement of existing unmanned workboats. Currently there are about 25 UAVs in the inventory of the Israeli navy. The Israeli Navy has used UAVs in a variety of capacities since they first entered the Israeli Defense Forces in 2021. As this unmanned system continues to mature it will surely find more applications in the civilian sector. This is only one application, however; there are many potential uses for remotely piloted vehicles in the United States Navy and elsewhere in the world.


What is very clear is that there is no stopping the progress of this exciting and emerging area of military technology and military applications. As the technologies, programs and systems behind robotic vehicle operations and activities continue to advance, we can only expect to see better and more cost effective ways of conducting military operations in the future. As these technologies, programs and systems mature we can only expect this level of cooperation and coordination to occur. As the world wakes up to the potential of marine autonomy it will usher in a new era of military competition. This competition will serve to make the United States Navy even more efficient and effective in its future endeavors.


In addition to the many potential uses for unmanned aerial vehicles or RVs as they are more commonly known, this technology does have one more potential application; it can be applied to the high risk mitigation and insurance industry. Insurance companies and underwriters can use sophisticated remote control UAVs to gather information on the conditions of potential ship victims during a ship sinking or other catastrophic event. The data collected by these autonomous ships will be used to formulate policy's which will not only protect the financial investments of the company but will also deter the irresponsible behavior of would-be ship victims. This will make the potential loss of life much less severe as well as allow the insurance companies to provide the proper amount of coverage.
